Seismic Response of Public Buildings and Infrastructural Systems

February 6, 2018

The OSS – Seismic Observatory of Structures is the Italian network created and administrated by the Italian Civil Protection to permanently monitor the seismic response of approximately 150 structures including schools, hospitals, town halls and other public buildings, bridges and one dyke under strong earthquakes.

In the Emilia Romagna Region, nine public buildings are monitored by the OSS (hospitals, infrastructures, schools), concentrated in the east and the Appennine, which is more active from a seismic point of view. Following the May 20, 2012 Emilia earthquake, two monitoring mobile systems have been installed on the Prefectures of Ferrara and Modena.

Detailed information on the seismic response of the monitored public buildings, in terms of shaking intensity, structural vibrations and experienced deformations (interstorey drifts) under the main shock can be found in the document. The map shows the position of each structure, monitored by the OSS. Since the attached document is in Italian, the following nomenclature might be useful.

Nomenclature:

  • Sigla = Structure ID;
  • Stazione = Monitored Structure;
  • Comune = Municipality;
  • Tipologia = Structural Typology;
  • d = distance from the Epicenter;
  • amax [g] = maximum top acceleration in X and Y directions (plan view);
  • agmax [g] = maximum base acceleration in X and Y directions (plan view);
  • Drift = Interstorey Drift
