Shelter Conditions

January 30, 2018

Virtual Earthquake Reconnaissance Team (VERT) Summary by Erica C. Fischer.

Due to the number of displaced people from the Kumamoto earthquakes, Japan has to build more shelters. People are displaced due to collapsed houses and due to lack of utilities in areas. Many individuals were living in their cars, but due to the large number of aftershocks, that option is no longer safe. The shelters are overcrowded and the region was not prepared for the large number of displaced people. These shelters are struggling to find enough food and water for the number of displaced people. The overcrowded shelters can causes disease to spread rapidly. Japan will build 3,000 more shelters to house the displaced people.
