Seven EERI members (five from California) are among a 15-member committee named to guide revision of the National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Plan, according to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
Tenochtitlan, the capital city of the Aztecs, was founded in the midst of the lake of Mexico in the Valley of Mexico in 1321. Now Mexico City has more than 14 million inhabitants. The Valley of Mexico is a closed valley with orographic formations — chains of mountains and volcanoes — all around, including the famous Iztaccihuatl and Popocatepetl. The subsoil is stratified, formed by layers of volcanic ashes, sand, silt and clay, the most interesting subsoil in the world.
