Learning from Earthquakes Mission: Kumamoto Earthquake 2016, Japan

Introduction
A 4 member team from the New Zealand Society for Earthquake Engineering, comprising Dr Gabriele Chiaro, Dr Chris Massey, Gavin Alexander and P Brabhaharan, left New Zealand on 6th May and arrived in Oita, Japan on the evening of 7th May 2016.
The team joined Prof Junichi Koseki and three colleagues (Tamoko Sasaki, Naoya Nunokaua, Yudai Aoyagi) from University of Tokyo to survey damage around Aso City (Mt Aso volcanic caldera) on the 8th and 9th May.
This was followed on the 10th to 13th May 2016 by further surveys of the earthquake damage around Aso city, Mashiki township and Kumomoto city, with two Japanese colleagues (Associate Prof Suguru Yamada and Yodai Aoyagi). The earthquake reconnaissance was concluded on the evening of Friday 13th May 2016, and the team is returning to New Zealand on 15th May 2016.
