Hazus loss estimation results for the recent M 6.4 event WSW of Ferndale, California.

The loss estimates provided were calculated using the USGS ShakeMap version 7 available at: https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/nc73821036/shakemap/intensity.

High level summary:

  • $402M in total economic losses, only $33M is considered structural
  • Nearly all losses occur in Humboldt County
  • 7,750 damaged structures
    • 6,770 Affected
    • 920 Minor
    • 64 Major
    • <10 Destroyed

Data Links

New Inventory data from Hazus 6.0 were used in this analysis and includes general building stock updates for building counts, building value, content value and square footage estimates at the census block and census tract levels.  These data inventory updates, released in November 2022 as part of Hazus 6.0 are available at: https://msc.fema.gov/portal/resources/hazus

  • Building data are based on NSI 2022.
  • Building valuations are derived from 2022 RS Means.
  • Essential facility occupancy types (police station, fire station, emergency operations center, hospital, primary, grade schools, college/universities) for general building stock data are based on HIFLD Open (https://hifld-geoplatform.opendata.arcgis.com/) data and are more complete.

These Hazus model estimates were reviewed by FEMA and USGS SMEs and should be considered authoritative for this ShakeMap version.
