HAZUS Analysis for M6.4 Earthquake in Puerto Rico

HAZUS reports from analysis using USGS ShakeMap version 4 for the M6.4 earthquake.

High level summary of estimated impacts:

  • $838M in total economic losses, including $380M in Ponce
  • 52,380 damaged structures
    • 41,380 Affected
    • 10,370 Minor
    • 620 Major
    • 10 Destroyed

New Hazus Puerto Rico Inventory data were used in this analysis and includes general building stock updates for building Counts, building value, content value and square footage estimates at the census block and census tract levels. These data inventory updates, released November 2019 are available at: https://msc.fema.gov/portal/resources/hazus

  • Building areas are based on building footprints and number of stories, and provide more accurate/complete area and dollar exposure estimates. The areas are based on building footprints and number of stories data.
  • Building valuations are based on 2018 RS Means.
  • Essential facility occupancy types (police station, fire station, emergency operations center, hospital, primary, grade schools, college/universities) for general building stock data are based on HIFLD Open (https://hifld-geoplatform.opendata.arcgis.com/) data to footprints and are more complete.
  • Large building areas assigned to Single Family Homes or Mobile Homes were reassigned to appropriate multifamily categories based on area.
