Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker reported that an additional portion of the Central Business District will be reopened to owners of buildings this Thursday followed by access to the public on Friday. Many other zones in the CBD remain closed to the public and and those few who are granted access require escorts by light Urban Search and Rescue personnel.

63,823 buildings have been assessed. Of those, 1,55 residential building have been posted red so far. 340 out of 849 heritage buildings have been posted red. Of the commercial buildings placarded, 730 are red, 756 yellow, and 2029 are green. Controversies about the deconstruction of a few heritage buildings are brewing. 24 buildings have been approved for deconstruction.

1,500 portaloos have been deployed. 10,000 chemical toilets have been given to homeowners. 95 percent of the water supplies are now reconnected, but boil water directives are still in effect for the city. Some stopbanks or levees have moved toward the water and there are concerns about low-lying areas that have subsided during the earthquake, particularly during high tides.

This for a population of 400,000 in the region.
