Available Information
Professor Polat Gülkan of the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, and Professor Mustafa Erdik of the Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute of Bogaziçi University in Istanbul, both long-time members of EERI, took teams out into the field for preliminary investigations of the earthquake fault and the damage associated with the earthquake in Bingöl. Seref Polat, a structural designer with the engineering firm of Rutherford and Chekene in Oakland, California, and currently on leave from a PhD program at the Kandilli Observatory, and Professor William Mitchell, a political scientist with Baylor University and an authority on Turkey and past response and recovery efforts for Turkish earthquakes, joined them. Their preliminary report on the earthquake was published as an insert to EERI’s Newsletter. This report, as well as other reports and photos of the event, can be found through the links below.
