Strong Ground Motion data from Nepal’s mainshock and two larger aftershocks

February 7, 2018

Virtual Earthquake Reconnaissance Team (VERT) Summary by Ashly Cabas.

The Center for Engineering Strong Motion Data (CESMD) has made available strong motion records from the station NQ.KATNP (www.strongmotioncenter.org). The following links lead to strong ground motion data from Nepal’s mainshock and two larger aftershocks.

(1) Magnitude 7.8 Gorkha earthquake (mainshock) on April 25th, 2015

(2) Magnitude 7.3 Aftershock on May 12th, 2015 at 07:05 (approximately 75 km to the ENE from the station)

(3) Magnitude 6.3 Aftershock on May 12th, 2015 at 07:36 (approximately 84 km to the ENE from the station)

Note: According to the CESMD, the start times of the records from this station do not have accurate absolute time.

The USGS has recently published an updated aftershock advisory for the magnitude 7.8 Gorkha earthquake. The document succinctly describes the nature of these aftershocks as well as their probability of occurrence:
